Residents in several Bangkok condominiums may soon pay different waste fees depending on how well they sort their trash, and Denmark is involved in the new system, according to a Facebook post by the Embassy of Denmark in Thailand.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has launched a waste-sorting pilot project in ten condominiums in Khlong Toei and Watthana districts. The project is carried out together with Danish environmental authorities under the Thai–Danish strategic cooperation on circular economy.

Lower fees if you sort correctly

Bangkok currently produces around 8,700 tonnes of waste per day, according to Greener Bangkok. More than half of it is foodwaste.

Under the upcoming rules, households and condominiums that clearly separate food waste and recyclables may pay lower waste fees, National Thailand reports. Those that mix their waste could pay more.

The pilot project aims to help condominiums prepare for the new system and test practical sorting solutions in high-rise buildings.

For condominium residents – including Scandinavian expats – waste sorting may soon affect not only the environment, but also monthly expenses.

The Bangkok test will run until early 2027. If successful, the model could expand to more districts across the city.
