Sweden’s ambassador to Singapore, Anders Fredrik Sjöberg, highlighted opportunities for Sweden–Singapore energy cooperation at a forum on 29 October.

Speaking at the Spotlight Sweden Forum during Singapore International Energy Week, Sjöberg offered Swedish experience in regional electricity markets and power connections.

He pointed to Sweden’s expertise in high-voltage direct current technology and submarine cables. Sweden could also share regulatory and policy experience as Southeast Asian countries develop connections between national electricity grids.

Puah Kok Keong, chief executive of Singapore’s Energy Market Authority, welcomed contributions from Swedish companies and institutions. He highlighted the ASEAN Power Grid as a way to strengthen energy security and expand cross-border electricity trade.

Nuclear energy and stronger grids

The forum’s programme also focused on nuclear energy and grid resilience. Listed speakers included representatives from Swedish nuclear companies Blykalla and SKB International, alongside Singapore’s nuclear research and safety institute.

A separate panel brought together grid specialists from Unipower, Hitachi Energy and Singapore Energy Interconnections. Its focus was how electricity networks can manage growing demand while integrating more renewable power.

The discussions followed an energy cooperation agreement signed in November 2024. Both governments reaffirmed the partnership during Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam’s visit to Sweden earlier this month.
