Singapore and Sweden have agreed to deepen cooperation on regional power grid development, clean energy and nuclear safety as part of ongoing efforts to support Southeast Asia’s green transition.
The announcement was made alongside the 18th Singapore International Energy Week, building on a Memorandum of Understanding on energy cooperation signed during King Carl XVI Gustaf’s state visit to Singapore in November 2024.
The partnership will focus on electricity trading and infrastructure for regional grid connections, including High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) and subsea transmission technologies linked to the ASEAN Power Grid. Both countries will also explore collaboration on clean fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia, as well as nuclear technologies and safety.
Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Business and Industry, Ebba Busch, spoke at the event, emphasising innovation as a driver of the global energy transition.
Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of Singapore’s Energy Market Authority, said the strengthened cooperation “will support ongoing efforts to realise the ASEAN Power Grid and catalyse new ideas and opportunities for the energy transition.”
“We look forward to deepening this partnership and realising a sustainable and secure energy future for all,” he added.
The initiative follows a series of high-level exchanges this year between Singapore and Sweden on hydrogen, smart grids and energy efficiency, underscoring growing Nordic–ASEAN collaboration in advanced energy technologies.
