A simple coconut ice cream from a street cart has turned into a small cultural moment between Sweden and Thailand.
The Swedish Embassy in Bangkok recently shared a photo of First Secretary Emanuel Lundin enjoying a traditional Thai coconut ice cream outside the embassy.
The post, captioned “Thai ice cream hits different,” quickly gained attention among Thai social media users.
The embassy highlighted the dessert’s local toppings, including peanuts, palm seeds and sweet corn, and praised the experience as both authentic and affordable, with the ice cream costing just 40 baht.
“Nice to see diplomats enjoying authentic Thai life, just like the locals,” the embassy wrote.
The ice cream cart, located near BTS Nana station in central Bangkok, became part of a wider online discussion about Thai desserts.
The debate followed controversy involving an Italian gelato brand, which led many Thai users to defend traditional coconut ice cream for its unique flavour, generous toppings and accessibility.
The Swedish Embassy’s post was widely welcomed as a gesture of appreciation for Thai culture and everyday life.
