The holiday ended before it began. Minutes after landing in Phuket, a Norwegian tourist was taken aside at passport control and locked inside an airport detention cell, Verdens Gang reports.

Marcus Haavik, 26, was stopped by immigration officers February 27 after they discovered that a page at the back of his passport had been torn out.

“I have never noticed that myself. I don’t know what could have happened,” he said to Verdens Gang.

Haavik had arrived in Thailand with his friend Jesper Lindberg for a planned two-week holiday including Phuket, the Phi Phi islands and Bangkok.

Instead, Haavik was taken away by officials and later placed in a detention cell at the airport while authorities handle the case.

He says he has received little information about what will happen next and has been told he may be sent out of Thailand on a flight later in the week.

Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is aware of the case but cannot comment on individual consular matters.

It remains unclear whether the Norwegian tourist has since been sent back to Norway, as no further updates about the case have been reported.
