Vietnam is pushing to strengthen defence cooperation with Sweden following high-level talks in Hanoi this week.

During a meeting on May 12, Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Phan Van Giang told Swedish Ambassador Johan Ndisi that Sweden is considered one of Vietnam’s most important partners in Northern Europe, according to Voice of Vietnam (VOV).

Giang highlighted defence industry cooperation and telecommunications technology as key areas where the two countries are already working together — but stressed that the potential for even closer collaboration remains “substantial”.

Invites Sweden to deepen cooperation

Vietnam hopes to expand cooperation through military training, high-level exchanges and a formal defence agreement between the two countries.

Swedish defence leaders and companies has also been invited to attend the Vietnam Defence Expo in December, where international firms will showcase military technology and equipment.

Sweden and Vietnam elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in science, technology and innovation in 2025.
