Sweden is promoting child road safety in Vietnam through a school-based campaign focused on proper helmet use, inspired by the Swedish Vision Zero approach.
The initiative was marked on Tuesday 17 December at Trung Yen Primary School in Hanoi, where the Embassy of Sweden took part in the Traffic Safety 2025 campaign under the theme “Safe helmets, safe children”.
The campaign was jointly organised by the Swedish Embassy, helmet manufacturer Protec, the Yen Hoa Ward People’s Committee and the school. During the event, 400 standard-certified helmets were distributed to pupils.
Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam Johan Ndisi said that promoting helmet use among children is a simple but effective way to reduce fatalities and serious injuries in a country where motorbikes remain the main mode of transport.
“Giving helmets to children is a practical action and a reminder that safety begins with very simple choices,” he says.
The ambassador linked the campaign to Sweden’s Vision Zero policy, which aims to eliminate traffic-related fatalities through a combination of safer infrastructure, law enforcement and education.
According to the World Health Organization, traffic accidents remain one of the leading causes of death among children in Vietnam. WHO data show that wearing a helmet correctly significantly reduces the risk of death and serious head injuries.
Ambassador Ndisi says the Swedish Embassy will continue working with Vietnamese partners on initiatives that promote road safety awareness and help protect children on the roads.
