China Daily, a media outlet widely regarded as a mouthpiece of the Chinese government, published on 28 February 2025 an editorial urging Europe to adopt an independent foreign policy and strengthen economic ties with China, arguing that the United States has become a challenge, rival, and even a threat to Europe.
According to the editorial, “The transatlantic alliance is unraveling, and it is unlikely to be restored in the future.” The piece suggests that Europe’s best course of action is to develop policies “free from US interference” and work with China to promote open trade policies over protectionism.
China Daily also emphasizes that “China’s domestic and foreign policies are increasingly stable and predictable,” implying that Beijing offers a more reliable partnership compared to Washington, particularly as Europe faces an uncertain political climate in the US.
While Norway is not an EU member, it maintains close economic and political ties with the bloc. As China’s message is directed at the European Union, it remains to be seen how European leaders will respond to Beijing’s call for closer cooperation amid geopolitical shifts.
