Swedish embassy took part in International Day of Democracy Myanmar

Head of rhe Swedish Embassy Section Office in Yangon gave the opening speech when International IDEA Myanmar celebrated the International Day of Democracy.

On 17 September The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) Myanmar celebrated the International Day of Democracy with the theme “Reflecting on the Global State of Democracy and Linking with Myanmar’s Democratic Transition”.

The Head of Swedish Embassy Section Office in Yangon, Mr. Johan Hallenborg, gave the opening speech and highlighted that the fundaments of democracy are freedom of expression, freedom of the press, free exchange of political ideas and accountability for those elected into office.

The event continued with International IDEA’s presentation on the Swedish-sponsored report “The Global State of Democracy”, and later a panel discussion concerning democracy in Myanmar.

EU Ambassador Kristian Schmidt made the closing remarks, in which the Ambassador reiterated EU’s and its members states’ call for the release of the two Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo.

International IDEA is is an intergovernmental organization that works to support and strengthen democratic institutions and processes around the world.
