Denmark’s Maersk Tankers is taking over leading Swedish operator Broström in a USD 569m deal.
Lloyd’s List reports that Denmark’s Maersk Tankers is taking over leading Swedish operator Broström, a move that makes Maersk a world leader in the product tanker segment. The USD 569m deal will give Maersk a combined owned and chartered fleet of 138 vessels excluding ships on order.
“The scale of the combined operation will enable us to offer a superior worldwide service through a large, modern and homogenous fleet,” Maersk Tankers’ chief executive Søren Skou told Lloyd’s List. “We need scale to ensure our organisation is cost effective and for customers to have an easy access to chartering offices globally.”
In 2007 the combined revenues of Maersk Tankers and Broström totalled USD 1.2bn, and profits after tax USD 469m. The workforce of the expanded Maersk Tankers enterprise will be 3,229 with 2,812 at sea.
Lloyd’s List writes that Broström has expanded in Asia over the past five years, and increased its Asian fleet from 9 to 22 tankers in 2007.
