Indonesia and Finland have agreed to deepen their cooperation on sustainable lake management, forest rehabilitation and climate finance during a bilateral meeting at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, on Tuesday 18 November 2025.
Indonesia’s Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, met with Finland’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Sari Multala, to discuss how Finnish environmental expertise can support Indonesia’s climate resilience. Minister Nurofiq highlighted Finland’s long-standing experience in managing lakes and water resources.
“One of them is lake management. We know that Finland is a country with a million lakes. Almost all of its lakes are well-managed,” he said, noting that Indonesia plans to expand cooperation to strengthen the capacity of its own lake systems.
The ministers also discussed forest rehabilitation, where Finland has developed advanced methods for restoring degraded forest areas. According to Minister Nurofiq, the two countries have worked together for many years and intend to continue building the partnership.
Indonesia additionally invited Finland to collaborate on developing carbon governance and carbon markets, emphasising the importance of international support to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. The Indonesian delegation also raised opportunities for cooperation on methane capture in the biofuel sector, particularly relating to palm oil production.
