Norden marks construction milestone for new multipurpose vessel in China

On Wednesday 17 April 2025, Danish shipping company Norden and its Chinese partner Baosheng HK celebrated the start of construction on a new multipurpose cargo vessel (MPP) with a ceremonial steel-cutting event at the shipyard in Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, China.

The vessel, designed specifically for Norden, will be 145 meters long and 22.6 meters wide, with a carrying capacity of 17,500 deadweight tons (DWT). It has been engineered to operate at a speed of 14.5 knots and is built to meet the latest international standards for energy efficiency (EEDI Phase III).

According to Baosheng HK, the ship’s design has been thoroughly updated from traditional MPPs, with improvements in structure, layout, onboard systems, and fuel efficiency. The vessel will be able to carry a variety of cargo, including containers and oversized goods, and has been designed to improve visibility from the bridge, enhancing safety during navigation.

This project highlights Norden’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its fleet with more flexible and environmentally responsible vessels. The ship is part of a growing trend in the maritime industry to reduce emissions and adapt to changing cargo demands.

Baosheng HK, which specializes in designing and building multi-purpose vessels, emphasized that the new ship reflects its goal to produce efficient, versatile, and eco-friendly solutions for global shipping partners.
