A macaque monkey at Phra Prang Sam Yot temple bit a Swedish tourist. Temple caretaker Banjerd Roisaensuk criticized the lack of a stronger police presence, suggesting the attack could have been avoided.

A Swedish tourist visiting the famous Phra Prang Sam Yot temple in Lop Buri was bitten on the neck by a macaque on Monday evening, according to Bangkok Post.

The victim, Joel Gilbert, received treatment and a rabies vaccination at Phra Narai Maharat Hospital.

Temple caretaker Banjerd Roisaensuk explained that macaques in the area are known for aggressive behavior, often triggered by proximity to them or their young. He criticized the lack of a stronger police presence, suggesting the attack could have been avoided.

Efforts to control the macaque population by the Department of National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation had temporarily reduced their numbers. However, the monkeys continue to return, posing ongoing challenges to both locals and visitors.

Phra Prang Sam Yot, famous for its historical significance, is also a hotspot for macaque activity, which attracts and occasionally endangers tourists.
