After a previous controversy over Taiwanese nationals being registered as “Chinese” on Danish residence permits, tensions have now escalated.
Taiwan has revoked certain privileges granted to Danish diplomatic staff, marking a clear response to the ongoing dispute with Denmark, Taipei Times reports.
The move was confirmed by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has repeatedly urged Denmark to correct what it calls an erroneous nationality designation affecting Taiwanese citizens since 2024.
“The ministry once again solemnly calls upon the Danish government to propose an acceptable solution as soon as possible,” said Eric Huang, head of the ministry’s Department of European Affairs.
Officials in Taipei say dialogue is still ongoing through Taiwan’s representative office in Denmark. However, the latest step signals growing frustration.
The exact privileges that have been withdrawn have not been disclosed. Authorities say further measures could follow if the issue is not resolved.
Taiwan has warned that the situation could harm bilateral relations as both sides continue diplomatic communication.
