Vietnam celebrates 80 years of Moomins during Finnish Literature Week

Vietnam is currently celebrating Finnish literary culture with a special focus on the beloved Moomin characters, as part of Finnish Literature Week taking place in Hanoi from 11 to 20 July 2025.

Hosted at Kim Dong Publishing House and co-organised with the Embassy of Finland in Vietnam and the Initiative of Children’s Book Creative Content (ICBC), the event includes the exhibition “Tove Jansson & Moomins 80”, marking eight decades since the first Moomin story by Finnish author Tove Jansson.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Keijo Ensio Norvanto, Ambassador of Finland to Vietnam, highlighted the importance of introducing Vietnamese children and families to Finnish literature.

“Moomin stories reflect core Finnish cultural values and continue to inspire readers across generations,” said the ambassador.

The exhibition and accompanying events offer an interactive space for readers to engage with Jansson’s iconic universe through book readings, art workshops, film screenings, and creative activities.

Kim Dong Publishing House has so far released eight translated Moomin titles in Vietnam, with translations by Vo Xuan Que and editorial contributions from Dr. Bui Viet Hoa.

Vu Thi Quynh Lien, Deputy Director and Editor-in-Chief of Kim Dong Publishing House, said this is the first time that Vietnamese readers have the chance to explore the life and world of the Moomins through such a comprehensive cultural experience.

In addition to Moomin-themed activities, Finnish Literature Week also introduces Vietnamese children to other Finnish literary works. On 12 July, the book Hello Ruby – Journey into the Internet by Linda Liukas was presented to children aged 5 to 9, teaching digital concepts through storytelling and play.

Further highlights include a screening of an animated Moomin film on 13 July, a clay modeling activity to “Build the Moomin House,” and the launch of The Last Mermaid – Echoes from Ocean Legends by Iida Turpeinen on 19 July. The launch event will include a panel discussion with Vietnamese author Di Li and academic Dr. Nguyen Thanh Nam.
