Denmark and Thailand sign agreements on circular economy and waste management

Two new agreements between Denmark and Southeast Asian partners were signed this week in Bangkok to enhance regional collaboration on sustainability and waste management.

The first agreement was signed during a morning session at the Danish residence in Bangkok on Tuesday 1 April 2025, where the ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue (ACSDSD) and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (DEPA) reaffirmed their commitment to advancing circular economy initiatives across the ASEAN region.

In the afternoon, a Letter of Intent was signed between Thailand’s Department of Local Administration (DLA) and DEPA, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation in sustainable waste management and the implementation of Thailand’s Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy model.

“These agreements reflect our joint commitment to sustainable development,” said Danish Ambassador to Thailand, Danny Annan, according to the Facebook page of the embassy.

The signings build on ongoing cooperation between the two countries in the field of waste management. In November 2024, a Thai delegation visited Denmark to study the country’s approach to extended producer responsibility (EPR) and circular economy practices. The delegation included representatives from key Thai ministries and organizations involved in environmental policy.

According to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, Thailand generates around 26 million tons of household waste annually, much of which ends up in landfills. The shared goal of the partnership is to develop sustainable systems that increase recycling rates and reduce waste, supporting green economic growth in both Thailand and the broader ASEAN region.
