Finland shares climate success lessons with Malaysia

Outi Honkatukia, Director for Climate and Chemicals at Finland’s Ministry of the Environment.

Finland’s achievements in climate solutions and circular economy are offering valuable lessons for Malaysia, according to Malaysian news agency Bernama.

Finland has become one of the global front-runners in green innovation through strong political commitment, public-private cooperation, and integration of sustainability into education and research. Malaysia is now seeking to draw from that experience as it develops its own circular economy framework.

Malaysia’s current initiatives include the Circular Economy Blueprint for Solid Waste (2025–2035) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap, both aimed at reducing waste and supporting renewable energy. The government is studying Finland’s model, which combines advanced waste-to-energy systems, CO₂ capture, and public-private partnerships across industry and academia.

Experts highlight that education and innovation will be key to success, and that cross-border cooperation with Finland could help Malaysia accelerate its transition.
