New developments in Laos: Three more arrested following methanol poisoning incident

Three more arrested

Three more people allegedly linked to the Laos methanol poisonings that killed two Danish tourists were arrested.

Following the tragic methanol poisoning incident that struck a group of tourists in Vang Vieng on November 12, authorities made significant arrests. The incident resulted in six fatalities, including two Danish women, and left several others hospitalized.

Laotian officials launched an extensive investigation after the alarming deaths, leading to the arrest of eight individuals connected to Nana Backpackers Hostel last week. Over the weekend, police apprehended three additional suspects. According to News.com.au, authorities arrested two Indian men, aged 24 and 30, and a 35-year-old Filipino woman, all linked to the hostel that served the poisoned alcohol.

Local authorities reported that many of the ill tourists consumed the tainted alcohol at Nana Backpackers Hostel. The two Danish victims stayed at the hostel when they fell gravely ill.

One theory suggests that a bottle of locally branded Tiger vodka used for “free shots” at Nana Backpackers Hostel contributed to the group of backpackers falling ill, but hostel staff deny tampering with the bottle.

Before staying at Nana Backpackers Hostel, the two Danish girls stayed at Mad Monkey Hostel, located one kilometer away. The manager at Mad Monkey Hostel described the two girls as lively and filled with joy to B.T.

As investigators continue their work, the community remains on high alert regarding alcohol safety, urging travelers to exercise caution when consuming drinks in unfamiliar places.
