Temu responds to Swedish Minister: “We are more eco-friendly than other retailers”

The low-cost platform Temu has pushed back against Swedish climate minister Romina Pourmokhtari’s (L) recent call to prohibit the company’s operations in Sweden. Contrary to the minister’s claims, Temu asserts that it is more environmentally friendly than its competitors.

In an interview with Aftonbladet, Minister Pourmokhtari expressed sharp criticism of the popular discount site, claiming that Temu and similar platforms from China contribute to environmental degradation and poor labor conditions. As a result, she has proposed a ban on the import of Temu’s products to Sweden.

However, Temu has responded to these accusations, arguing against the perception that it operates at a lower environmental standard than others in the industry. “We have a significant advantage over traditional retail concerning environmental impact and overproduction,” stated Temu’s press department.

One of Temu’s key arguments is that its direct-to-consumer business model eliminates middlemen, which leads to reduced waste. “In terms of the environment, Temu enjoys a considerable advantage over traditional retail. Temu delivers products to Sweden that have already been sold to someone who intends to use them. Thus, unlike other retailers, there’s no risk that they remain unsold and turn into waste,” the company explained in an email to Aftonbladet.

Additionally, Temu denies the allegations of unethical labor conditions tied to its low prices. According to the company, these prices result from a more efficient business model. “Claims that Temu’s low prices stem from worker exploitation lack foundation. We encourage a closer examination of our business model, which primarily removes unnecessary costs,” they stated.

As the debate continues, Temu aims to reinforce its commitment to sustainability and ethical practices, positioning itself as a responsible player in the fast-evolving e-commerce landscape.
