Thailand and Sweden have taken a major step to deepen their bilateral relations with the signing of a Strategic Partnership agreement on 26 August 2025 in Stockholm.

During his visit to Sweden, Thai Foreign Minister Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa met with his Swedish counterpart Maria Malmer Stenergard over a working lunch, where the two ministers discussed cooperation in defence technology, innovation, startups, sustainable forestry, and the green energy transition.

The agenda also included trade and investment issues, with Sweden expressing support for the conclusion of the Thailand–EU Free Trade Agreement and Thailand’s bid to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Both sides also touched on visa facilitation for Thai passport holders in the Schengen area, as well as regional and global developments.

The new Strategic Partnership sets out a framework for closer collaboration in political dialogue, defence, trade and investment, green transition, innovation, and education between Thailand and Sweden. It also highlights the importance of strengthening ties and the shared commitment of Thailand and Sweden to expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
