A 34-year-old Swedish man, who first paid to get access to a 13-year-old Thai girl and later got her pregnant, has now been sentenced to six years in prison.

“The defendant has had repeated sexual intercourse with a child, which appears to be cynical, planned and deliberate,” said District Court Judge Rikke Lassen in court.

Oslo District Court concluded that the 34-year-old has purchased access to a child to satisfy his own sexual desires, and that he has exploited the child’s vulnerable and unprotected situation. The Swede, who has been living in Norway since 2007, was in court himself, and he appealed against the conviction right away.

He met the Thai girl at a bar on Koh Samui in 2008 when he was 26 years old, and she was 13 years old. Here, he was told that the girl was 18 years old, and he paid to take her with him to his hotel room and later on vacation to other places in Thailand.

During this journey, they had sexual intercourse several times, and the girl became pregnant. Even before the man left the country, he knew about the pregnancy. DNA tests have later shown that the 34-year-old is the father of the child.

The court believes that the accused was aware that the girl was very young, and that his explanation of not knowing about her young age is influenced by his desire to avoid punishment.

The judge also pointed out what is in the text of the law – that delusion about age does not exclude criminal liability.

In addition to the assault charges against the 13-year-old, the Swede was also convicted of being in possession of abusive images and drugs.
