King Harald of Norway has garnered attention by presenting the King’s Medal of Merit for the first time in 12 years, honoring 15 individuals for their exceptional service. All 15 recipients were on duty when the King experienced his health incident in Malaysia earlier this year. This significant gesture coincides with the King’s Birthday Anniversary, celebrated this December.
Among the recipients is King Harald’s personal physician, Dr. Bjørn Bendz, along with nurses, chamberlains, aides, and police officers who played vital roles during the King’s recent health challenges in Malaysia. The recognition follows a serious health incident that required the King to undergo surgery while abroad.
Tove Taalesen, a royal expert, remarked, “Receiving this medal is a significant honor. When 15 people receive it simultaneously, it indicates a special event. Many believe this may relate to the incident in Malaysia when the King fell ill.”
During his hospitalization in Malaysia, King Harald underwent surgery for health issues that required immediate medical attention. Reports indicate that Dr. Bendz and the medical team acted quickly to provide care, demonstrating their commitment during a critical time.
Guri Varpe, the communication director at the Royal Palace stated, “All recipients of the King’s Medal were on duty during his trip to Malaysia. Although we do not offer specific reasons for the awards, their contributions during this period were invaluable.”
She also confirmed the significance of the event, stating that the medals recognize the essential support provided to the King in a moment of vulnerability.
As the ceremony unfolds, those close to King Harald reflect on the significance of the honor. Recipients often celebrate their achievements with a reception hosted by His Majesty, adding to the emotional weight of the occasion.
