Alcohol sales were banned nationwide in Thailand last weekend in connection with the parliamentary election. This weekend, the same restrictions will once again be in force, according to the Royal Thai Police.

Alchohol will be prohibited around election day, from February 7th at 18:00 until February 8th at 18:00.

During the restricted periods, it is illegal to sell, serve, give away, or distribute alcohol of any kind.

This means that bars, restaurants, nightclubs, shops, supermarkets and hotels are not allowed to sell or serve alcoholic drinks. Free drinks and alcohol provided at events or promotions are also prohibited.

Any form of commercial is also covered by the ban.

Violations may result in up to six months in prison, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both.

Alcohol purchased before the ban may still be consumed in private settings, such as a hotel room or private residence. However, drinking in public places – including restaurants, cafés, bars, and other venues – remains strictly prohibited throughout the ban period.

The Royal Thai Police have stated that the rules will be enforced nationwide during the election period.
