Danish Minister visits China to discuss bilateral collaboration

Christina Egelund, Danish Minister for Higher Education and Science

Christina Egelund, Danish Minister for Higher Education and Science, travels to China this weekend to refine and strengthen Danish-Chinese collaborative agreements. Her visit focuses on exploring both the opportunities and challenges inherent in areas of mutual interest such as green research, climate change, the environment, and global health, where China serves as a crucial partner for Denmark and the international community.

Egelund’s visit underscores the significance of the 75-year diplomatic relationship between Denmark and China. Over the decades, China has evolved into a powerhouse in global research and innovation. However, the minister also draws attention to the need for cautious engagement with China, particularly in sensitive fields like quantum, space, and defense research, due to differing perspectives between the two governments.

The timing of Egelund’s visit is notable, occurring days after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen highlighted China’s geopolitical role in her New Year’s address. The Prime Minister pointed to China’s influence in European security dynamics, particularly with regard to Russia’s actions in the region. Egelund aims to navigate these complexities while ensuring that Denmark’s strategic interests are upheld.

During her stay, Minister Egelund will engage with China’s Minister of Education and Minister of Science and Technology. The meetings will culminate in the signing of “adapted collaboration agreements” designed to enhance cooperation while addressing any contentious issues. These agreements aim to strike a balance between leveraging opportunities for innovation and maintaining national security interests.

Additionally, Egelund will visit the Sino-Danish Center (SDC), a testament to the educational and research ties between the two countries. This visit will include discussions with representatives from Danish businesses actively engaged in research and innovation initiatives in China.
