A Danish tourist has died after falling ill shortly after returning from a snorkeling trip off Indonesia’s popular island of Nusa Penida, with local police believing he may have suffered a heart attack.
The 42-year-old man collapsed at his accommodation in Nusa Lembongan at around 11:30am on 29 June.
According to Nusa Penida Police, the man had just returned to Samah Nusa Lembongan Villa after snorkeling in the waters around Nusa Penida when he began experiencing shortness of breath and told companions that he felt unwell.
Villa staff and those travelling with him immediately provided first aid before taking him to East Medical Lembongan Clinic. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.
Police examined the scene and interviewed witnesses as part of the investigation.
A preliminary external examination found no signs of violence or physical injuries. Investigators believe the tourist may have suffered a sudden heart attack following the snorkeling trip, although the exact cause of death cannot be confirmed after his family declined an autopsy.
The body was later transferred to Bali Mandara Hospital in Denpasar for further handling.
“The victim’s family has accepted his passing and declined an autopsy,” Nusa Penida Police Chief I Ketut Kesuma Jaya said.
Authorities have not released the man’s full identity.
