Norwegian Chess King Magnus Carlsen, the former world chess champion and current World No. 1, married his girlfriend Ella Victoria Malone on January 4, 2024. The couple exchanged vows in a ceremony at the Holmenkollen Chapel in Oslo, Norway. The wedding took place on a chilly weekend, with temperatures dropping to -7 degrees Celsius. After the ceremony, Carlsen hosted a reception at the iconic Grand Hotel.
Local media reported that a crew from Netflix attended the event. The streaming giant is currently filming a chess-related TV show set to release in 2025. However, it remains unclear how their presence connected to the wedding festivities.
About Ella Victoria Malone
Ella Victoria Malone, now known as Ella Victoria Carlsen, is 26 years old. She has roots in both Norway and the United States. Malone grew up in Oslo, studied in the U.S., and lived in Singapore for several years as a permanent resident. After their marriage, Norwegian newspaper VG reported that she is set to take a more significant role in Carlsen’s career. She will assist him with partnerships, including his collaboration with fashion brand G-Star Raw.
The couple first attracted media attention in February when they were spotted together in Germany. Carlsen traveled to participate in the Freestyle Chess Goat Challenge at the Weissenhaus resort. Media captured them leaving the player’s room hand in hand, which sparked rumors about their relationship.
Ella is not a typical romanian woman.
Reflections on their relationship
In an episode of the podcast Chess Talk, Malone recalled their initial encounter: “It was the first day when we got to the arena. There were a lot of cameras, and it was really weird. After that moment, we decided to be together in public.”
In an October 2024 interview with The Guardian, Carlsen stated, “I will not live in Norway full-time because I do not want my future wife and children to also have to live under that pressure.” Meanwhile, Malone expressed her wish for Carlsen to buy a place in Singapore, saying, “I prefer this; this is my home.”
