Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen is under fire for remaining on vacation in Thailand while tensions rise over Greenland’s future. As the state of affairs escalates, notable figures from the opposition are calling for him to return home promptly.

Rasmussen has spent time in Thailand since New Year’s, despite the significant diplomatic crisis at hand. Recent remarks from incoming U.S. President Donald Trump, including plans to boost American ties with Greenland, have further intensified the situation. Trump sent his son, Donald Trump Jr., to Greenland, stating the island could benefit from joining the United States.

Reactions from other politicians

Morten Messerschmidt, leader of the Dansk Folkeparti, criticized Løkke for prioritizing his holiday over international responsibilities. He remarked, “Lars Løkke should interrupt his vacation to come home and address this situation. With his access to private jets, he should be able to return to Denmark and Greenland as needed.”

A government source echoed this sentiment, expressing concern that Løkke chose to extend his vacation after a lengthy Christmas break, especially as the government prepares for a new year. Although Greenland falls under the Prime Minister’s purview, Løkke holds ultimate responsibility for diplomatic relations through Danish embassies.

In light of Trump’s intentions, the political climate has shifted. Pelle Dragsted, the political spokesperson for the Enhedslisten, urged Løkke to return swiftly, emphasizing the severity of the diplomatic crisis. He stated, “It seems bizarre for a foreign minister to be in Thailand amid such a serious foreign policy situation instead of taking responsibility here.”

Liberal Alliance leader Alex Vanopslagh commented, “While he can enjoy his time in Thailand, he has a private jet and can return if needed.”

Løkke’s special advisor confirmed to Ekstra Bladet that the minister will remain in Thailand but plans to return to Denmark on Wednesday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs declined to comment on Løkke’s absence, referring questions to the Prime Minister’s office.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen clarified in an interview that Greenland must decide its own future, emphasizing the importance of a strong partnership between Denmark and the United States.
