Thirty students from Sweden and Norway have received Taiwanese government scholarships for studies in Taiwan in 2026.

Taiwan’s representative to Sweden, Phoebe Yeh, hosted an award ceremony on 14 August. The event was held in Stockholm and online, with 25 recipients attending.

The scholarships include three Taiwan Scholarships, 22 Huayu Enrichment Scholarships, and five language-study awards under the Taiwan Huayu BEST Program.

The Taiwan Scholarship supports degree studies, while the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship funds Mandarin studies at language centres in Taiwan.

Yeh encouraged the students to explore Taiwan and build ties with local society, expressing hope they will strengthen relations between Taiwan, Sweden, and Norway.

Halvor Eifring, professor of Chinese studies at the University of Oslo, also attended. He said Norwegian students value Taiwan’s democratic and open academic environment.

The University of Oslo will send five students to National Taiwan University through the Huayu BEST Program this year. Eifring said positive experiences from earlier students have boosted interest in studying Mandarin in Taiwan.

Members of the Taiwan Alumni Association in Sweden also shared advice with the recipients before their departure.

The total number of scholarships fell slightly from 33 in 2025 to 30 in 2026, but remains higher than the 22 awarded in 2024. The mission did not specify how many recipients are from Sweden or Norway respectively.
