Vietnam and Finland held a workshop in Hanoi on December 11 to share expertise on managing groundwater resources. Organized by Vietnam’s Department of Water Resources Management and the Finnish Embassy, the event focused on challenges like declining groundwater levels caused by urbanization and overuse.
Deputy Director Ngo Manh Ha highlighted the increasing pressure on groundwater in Vietnam, noting degradation in areas such as the Mekong Delta and Ho Chi Minh City. The workshop also introduced the new 2023 Law on Water Resources, effective from July 2024, which aims to protect and restore groundwater.
Finnish Development Policy Counsellor Maija Seppala shared Finland’s advanced groundwater monitoring and recharge methods, emphasizing the importance of early detection of issues like pollution. Finnish experts recommended adopting global best practices to address Vietnam’s groundwater challenges.
