Contest Organised To Seek Performance Art Talents

The
Denmark-Vietnam Development and Cultural Exchange Foundation has launched a
contest to seek talents of performance art – a new thing to Vietnamese
audiences.
    The contest
aims to support Vietnamese contemporary artists. The winner will be selected
from two rounds.
    In the
first round, the jury (Nguyen Nhu Huy, Tran Luong, Dao Anh Khanh) will choose
the best ten works for the second round. In this round, the winner will be
determined by audience vote.
    However,
the organising board and some jury members admitted that they don’t have a
clear conception about performance art. It is simply understood as artwork
performed by the bodies of artists in a certain time and space, emphasising
interaction between the artist and the audience. The language of performance
art has elements of stage, dance, music, etc.
    Two jury
members, Nguyen Nhu Huy and Dao Anh Khanh, said they don’t have specific
standards, so choosing ten works after the first round could be difficult. They
said evaluating performance art items is mainly based on the messages sent to
audiences through the items, the items’ influence on audience’s senses and the
experience of the jury member.
    It will be
more difficult for the audience to decide who the winner is because most people
don’t understand what performance art is and what its values are.
    “We don’t
know who will be the audience on the final night. We are trying to find people
who are really interested in this art,” said the Danish Ambassador to Vietnam
Peter Lysholt Hansen.
    “The
contest is preparation for audiences to receive this new kind of art”, he
added.
    Each artist
will be granted $500 to hone their work for the final night, which is scheduled
for October 16. The best work will receive $3,000.
    All
Vietnamese artists of less than 35 years old, who are operating in performance
art, can register for the contest. They can perform in groups (less than 11
people). Registering deadline is July 30, 2008.
