Bangkok is gearing up for one of its most unique Songkran celebrations yet. This year, all water-splashing festivities across the city will be strictly alcohol-free, and activities will wrap up by 10 pm, Bangkok Post reports.
The move, announced by Deputy Governor Tavida Kamolvej, aims to keep the festival safe.
“Safety is our top priority,” she said, noting that operational databases will be monitored 24/7 through the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration command centre.
Songkran, running from April 11-15, usually draws huge crowds. The city has designated 88 alcohol-free water-splashing areas, including popular hubs like Lan Khon Mueang, Bangkok City Hall, Silom Road, Khao San Road, Siam Square, and CentralWorld.
Organisers must follow strict rules: no large water cannons, no indecent displays, and no powdered chalk or talcum powder.
Bangkok has been divided into three zones for better management:
Zone 1: Official festival venues with clear safety plans
Zone 2: Areas where gatherings are likely but not officially organised
Zone 3: No-festivities zones, including hospitals, fire stations, police stations, major intersections, bridges, and expressways
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt warned that the heat index could reach 60 °C, urging organisers to prepare emergency units and provide drinking water.
Police Chief Sayam Boonsom expects more people to stay in Bangkok this year due to high travel costs, and additional officers will be on duty to ensure public safety.
Authorities hope the citywide alcohol ban will reduce accidents and conflicts, keeping the focus on fun, water, and community.
