Bangkok is heading into its governor and city council elections on June 28, and with them comes the familiar rule that shuts down alcohol sales across the capital for a full day, TimeOut Bangkok reports.

The ban begins at 6pm on June 27 and runs until 6pm on June 28, creating a sober buffer around polling day that has become part of Thailand’s electoral routine.

Authorities have consistently enforced alcohol bans during national and local votes, aiming to prevent late‑night chaos from spilling into the ballot box.

The restrictions cover every district in Bangkok, from Sukhumvit and Silom to Khao San Road and Thonglor, and apply to all venues that sell or serve alcohol. Bars, pubs, clubs, restaurants, convenience stores and supermarkets alike will be required to comply.

The penalties for ignoring the ban are severe: anyone caught selling or serving alcohol during the restricted hours faces up to six months in jail, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both.
