Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the future of engineering.

A new report from the Chinese Academy of Engineering highlights how AI is now central to major advances across industries, from energy to healthcare, China Daily reports.

Presented at the Zhongguancun Annual Forum in Beijing, the report identifies nearly 200 emerging engineering trends. A striking majority are linked to AI.

According to the report, AI is accelerating research, improving material performance, and shortening development cycles through data analysis and automated experiments.

Yang Baofeng, a member of the academy, described AI as “a powerful assistant” in fields such as aerospace and medicine. However, he stressed that it still plays a supporting role and cannot replace human expertise.

Peter David Lund, a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and the Swedish Engineering Academy in Finland, said AI is already helping solve complex challenges in energy systems, including smart grids and fusion research.

“These are just the first steps,” he said, adding that AI will play an even bigger role in the future.

He also underlined the importance of turning innovation into real-world solutions.

“The path to market is important already in the development phase.”
