Danish cellist performing the first time at Hanoi Opera House

Jonathan Swensen, the cellist.

Jonathan Swensen, a Danish cellist, will take a lead part of the concert ‘the Dramatic Pathetique’ with the Sun Symphony Orchestra’s concert, at the Hanoi Opera House on 15th November 2019.

Mr. Swensen was born in 1996 and raised in Gentofte. Music has always been a part of Jonathan’s life. His mother, who is a violinist, and his father, is both a conductor and violinist.

At the age of three, Jonathan conducted Sibelius’ symphonies with a chopstick. At the age of six, he sat in the concert hall while his father conducted Elgar’s cello concerto with Ralf Kirschbaum as soloist. This moment inspired him and was the first time he asked to play the cello. But then Jonathan was not allowed to play the cello. And his parents never paced him into music. Jonathan’s wish was met with the question: If your teacher tells you to practice everyday, would you do it? When Jonathan was seven before he could answer yes to that question, and he has been practising ever since.

He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music under Toke Møldruphas. He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree with Professor Torleif Thedèen at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.

He previously performed at festivals in Denmark including the Copenhagen Summer Festival, Schubertiade of the Schubert Society of Denmark, Fejø Kammermusikfestival and many others.

His musical achievements are: Won first prize at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 2018, as well as seven YCA performance prizes. He also captured first prizes at the Windsor Festival International String Competition (2019), Khachaturian International Cello Competition (2018), Danish String Competition (2016), and Swedish International Music Competition (2014).

In Hanoi, ‘the Dramatic Pathetique’ will be conduct by Olivier Fabrice Ochanine, a French conductor and flutist; he is founding Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Sun Symphony Orchestra of Hanoi, Vietnam and the former music conductor and chief conductor of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO), the national orchestra of the Philippines.

Mr. Ochanine holds a master’s degree in Conducting from the University of Southern California and pursued a Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting, at the Cincinnati College – Conservatory of Music, before taking up his post with the Philippine Philharmonic.

Mr. Swensen already arrived in Hanoi for rehearsing and is looking forward to be performing with other talented musicians at the Hanoi Opera House on 15th November 2019. Tickets available at Link
