The European Union and the Philippines have launched a €22.6-million initiative to strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, and use of satellite data, NewsBytes.ph reports.
The project is designed to improve connectivity, expand access to Earth observation data, and support the development of 5G technology and cyber capabilities.
At the heart of the program is a goal to position the Philippines as a regional digital hub. It also includes support for disaster preparedness and climate response through enhanced use of Copernicus satellite data, a key EU Earth observation system.
Finland plays a notable Nordic role in the project, contributing both funding and technical expertise through HAUS Finland. The country is involved in capacity-building efforts linked to digital skills, governance, and technology implementation.
The initiative is backed by €20 million from the EU, along with additional contributions from Finland and France.
Implementation has begun following the first Project Steering Committee meeting, marking the formal coordination between EU and Philippine agencies. Key partners include the Philippine Space Agency, the Department of Science and Technology, and the Department of Information and Communications Technology, alongside European institutions and experts.
The program is part of the EU’s wider Global Gateway strategy, which focuses on building infrastructure partnerships across digital, energy, and climate sectors worldwide.
