Finnish prime minister arrives in Beijing for four-day visit to China

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has arrived in Beijing for an official visit to China from 25 to 28 January, at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

According to Chinese authorities, Orpo is scheduled to meet President Xi Jinping during the visit. He will also hold talks with Premier Li and Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, focusing on bilateral relations and issues of common concern.

Finland was among the first Western countries to recognise the People’s Republic of China and the first European country to sign an intergovernmental trade agreement with China. In recent years, cooperation between the two countries has expanded under what both sides describe as a future-oriented partnership.

In 2025, bilateral trade between China and Finland exceeded USD 8 billion, while mutual investment stock surpassed USD 23 billion, according to Chinese officials.

During the visit, China’s Ministry of Commerce is expected to sign a memorandum of understanding with Finland aimed at strengthening the work of the China–Finland Committee for Innovative Business Cooperation. Enterprises from both countries are also set to sign several business cooperation agreements.

Orpo is accompanied by executives from more than 20 Finnish companies, representing sectors including machinery, forestry, innovation, clean energy and food.

China has said it attaches great importance to its relationship with Finland and is ready to strengthen high-level exchanges, deepen economic cooperation, promote people-to-people ties and enhance coordination in multilateral affairs.
