Xi Jinping urges Finland to back UN system

Xi told Finland’s Petteri Orpo that China and Finland should uphold a UN-led system, deepen cooperation, and support stable China–EU relations.

China’s President Xi Jinping told Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo that China and Finland should uphold a UN-centred international system. He also called for advancing a multipolar world order, according to China’s Xinhua news agency.

Xi said China hoped Finland would play a constructive role in supporting stable China–EU relations. Orpo went for a visit to Beijing from 25–28 January, Reuters reported.

The meeting came as Arctic security draws wider attention among Finland, its NATO partners, and China. Reuters noted recent debate followed US statements on Greenland and broader Arctic influence.

Xi urged closer cooperation in areas including energy transition, agriculture, and forestry. He also welcomed Finnish companies to expand in China’s market.

Orpo referred to what he called candid talks between Xi and Finland’s President Alexander Stubb during a 2024 Beijing visit. Talks covered undersea cable incidents and concerns about North Korean support for Russia’s war in Ukraine.
