Singaporean fugitive Wilson Raj Perumal, linked to major match fixing in Finland, has been convicted of human trafficking. A Hungarian court sentenced him in May 2025 to 11 years’ jail, the Strait Times recently uncovered.
Perumal earlier served prison time in Finland for match fixing offences in the domestic football league. Between 2008 and 2011, he bribed 11 foreign players with 470,000€ to influence more than 30 matches.
Finnish police arrested him in 2011 and uncovered his role in widespread international match fixing networks. However, under European Union rules, Finland returned him to Hungary instead of extraditing him to Singapore.
Singapore courts had earlier jailed Perumal for local offences, including assault, before he fled using a forged passport. The Singapore Police Force sought his extradition, but Finnish authorities said EU law required his transfer back to Hungary.
Perumal’s conviction closes another chapter in a case linking Singapore, Finland and European football corruption investigations. He remains in custody in Hungary while appealing the human trafficking verdict and sentence.
