Four Thai students namely Cattaliya Laohapotjanart, Thanwarat Jantiwatkun and Patnarin Kattiyasuwong will represent Thailand at the 2013 International Stockholm Junior Water Prize finale, to be held at the World Water Week in Stockholm on September 1-6.
The four Thai students visited the Embassy on August 14, 2013 and briefed Deputy Head of Mission Christoffer Berg about their project and upcoming visit to Sweden.
The winning project investigated the heavy metal removal capabilities of natural absorbents to discover a cleaner, safer, more cost efficient and feasible alternative to wastewater treatment. The Thai delegation will compete for the prestigious International Stockholm Junior Water Prize against finalists from 28 countries. The World Water Week in Stockholm is the leading annual meeting place for planet’s most urgent water-related issues. The Thai project will be on display at the World Water Week exhibition hall, where each finalist will be interviewed by a committee of international water experts who will select the competition winner.
The 2013 Prize will be presented by H.R.H Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden on September 4 during a ceremony at Stockholm International Fairs. The international winner receives a USD 5,000 award and a prize sculpture.
Each year, thousands of young participants, between 15-20 years of age, enter national Stockholm Junior Water Prize competitions in participating nations around the world. All finalists are the winners of national contests, which were selected from a field of thousands submitted projects worldwide. Finalists in 2013 will represent the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Cyprus, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, The Netherlands, Norway, Republic of Korea, Russian Federation, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States of America.
The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) administers the competition, which is sponsored globally by Xylem. H.R.H Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden is the Patron of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize.
