
A recently published report reveals fresh efforts by Thailand and Sweden to safeguard the thousands of Thai seasonal workers who travel each year to pick berries in Sweden, Ministry of Forerign Affairs, Kingdom of Thailand reports.
During high-level discussions in Stockholm, officials from Thailand’s Ministry of Labour met with representatives from the Royal Thai Embassy and the Swedish Migration Agency.
The talks focused on ensuring smooth work permit procedures, protecting workers’ rights, and improving pre-departure preparation for Thai labourers. Key topics included working hours, daily and weekly rest periods, and providing clear guidance on employment contracts.
Both sides stressed the importance of preventing forced labour and human trafficking, while making the process transparent and fair.
The Thai Embassy will continue facilitating communication between workers, employers, and authorities, aiming to prevent unnecessary costs or complications for the workers.
Thai workers will receive guidance on Sweden’s legal system, labour market, and their rights, including materials produced by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). These efforts reflect a shared commitment to safe, lawful, and dignified labour mobility, ensuring that Thai berry pickers can contribute to Sweden’s agricultural sector without facing exploitation or uncertainty.
