Thailand will keep its key border crossings with Cambodia in Trat and Chanthaburi closed for now, with no negotiations yet initiated on reopening them, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has confirmed to Bangkok Post.
According to the government, it is not the right time to begin discussions. Any reopening would depend on a gradual process to restore relations between the two countries.
The continued closure affects movement and trade along Thailand’s eastern frontier, an area that typically sees regular cross-border activity.
At the same time, Thai authorities are reinforcing their security presence.
Royal Thai Navy commander-in-chief Admiral Pairote Fuangchan visited the border this week, calling the area a crucial frontline for protecting national sovereignty. Military units have been instructed to strengthen readiness, including personnel, equipment, and tactical response.
Officials have also dismissed speculation that border checkpoints in the region could soon be used to send humanitarian aid into Cambodia.
For now, there is no timeline for reopening, and no indication of when talks might begin.
