Thailand’s Swedish Gripen fighter jets involved in real combat for the first time

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has deployed its Swedish‑built JAS 39C/D Gripen fighter jets in combat for the first time, marking a historic moment for the aircraft and for Sweden’s defence industry.

On Saturday 26 July 2025, two Gripen jets flew alongside Thailand’s older F‑16 Fighting Falcons in a mission targeting Cambodian artillery positions firing on Thai troops along the disputed border. According to the Bangkok Post, the mission was successful, and all aircraft returned safely to base.

This is the first time any Gripen aircraft has been used in real combat. Thailand has operated the fighter jets since 2011, but until now they had been limited to training, air shows and border patrols.

Developed by Sweden’s Saab AB under the “Smart Fighter” concept, the Gripen is designed for network‑centric warfare. The aircraft can integrate with radar systems, ground stations and other aircraft in real time, allowing for high operational flexibility.

The Gripen’s first combat deployment provides Saab with a significant credibility boost. Combat experience is often seen as an important factor for potential buyers. In recent years, Saab has sought to expand Gripen sales worldwide, with countries such as the Czech Republic, Brazil, Hungary and South Africa already operating the aircraft. In June 2025, Peru signed a deal to acquire 24 JAS 39E/F Gripens.

Sweden joined NATO in March 2024 and has since deployed Gripen jets to alliance missions, including six aircraft sent to Poland for air policing. Saab is also working on future‑oriented projects, such as a trial of an AI‑piloted Gripen E known as “Centaur,” tested in simulated combat against a human pilot in June 2025.

The successful Thai mission is likely to strengthen Saab’s position in the international defence market and reinforce Sweden’s reputation as a developer of advanced, combat‑ready military technology.
