The Energy and Environment Partnership (EEP) between Finland and Indonesia was receltly launched in the National Bio Energy Summit held in Jakarta. Deputy Head of Mission, Ms. Päivi Alatalo was invited as a guest speaker in the opening ceremony of the two-day combined seminar and exhibition. The keynote speech in the opening ceremony was delivered by the Indonesian Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources Bapak Darwin Zahedy Saleh. The audience at the opening ceremony was also addressed by the Director General for Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Bapak Luluk Sumiarso.

The agreement between Finland and Indonesia on Energy and Environment Partnership (EEP) was singed already in February 2011. However, the launching of the partnership kicked off the actual activities to be conducted within the framework of the EEP.

The overall objective of the EEP with Indonesia is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to combat climate change by improving access to sustainable renewable energy in the participating provinces of Central Kalimantan and Riau.

In its first stage, the program will focus on the utilization of wood based biomass and agricultural residues as renewable energy sources. Building on Finnish expertise in energy production from biomass, the EEP program will provide grants of 70 000 to        200 000 euroto Indonesian-based private companies, NGOs, farmer/industry associations, research institutes and universities to support biomass development. Project proposals are also expected from the public sector.

The program funds pilot and demonstration projects, feasibility studies and strategic studies for renewable energy and energy efficiency development. The activities may involve capacity building, awareness-raising, as well as promotion of renewable energies as part of policy programs to achieve socially, economically and environmentally sustainable development.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland has granted 4 million euro for the program for 2011-2014. The program will be implemented by the Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The EEP will thus directly support Government of Indonesia´s Clean Energy initiative aiming at increasing renewable energy utilization and energy efficiency.

The first Call for Proposals will open in June 2011.
