Chinese paleontologist elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

Professor Zhu Min from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) in Beijing has been elected as a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, according to China Daily. The election took place on Tuesday 12 February 2025, during the academy’s general meeting.

Professor Zhu, a leading expert in vertebrate paleontology, was recognized in the biosciences category for his extensive research on early fish fossils and evolutionary biology. His work has contributed significantly to understanding the origins of vertebrates, an area of great interest to the scientific community.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences is one of the world’s most prestigious institutions, responsible for awarding the Nobel Prizes in Physics and Chemistry, as well as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Foreign membership is granted only to internationally distinguished scientists who have made outstanding contributions to their field.

Zhu Min’s election highlights the growing global influence of Chinese scientists and the increasing collaboration between China and Sweden in scientific research. His work has been instrumental in advancing knowledge about the evolution of early life on Earth, an area that has also been of interest to Nordic researchers in paleontology and biosciences.
