A major step in modernising the Philippines’ offshore fishing industry has been launched through a new partnership with Denmark.

The pilot project introduces Danish pelagic midwater trawl systems and other fishing technologies into Philippine waters. The goal is to increase efficiency while making fishing more sustainable, Inquirer.net reports.

Alongside the technology trials, both countries will carry out test fishing, hydro-acoustic surveys and biomass mapping in key areas including the West and East Philippine Seas and Benham Rise. The data will be used to better understand fish stocks and guide future fisheries policy.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the initiative is about combining science and technology to strengthen the sector.

“This project is about applying technology and science to unlock the full potential of our fisheries resources. We want to improve fish production, strengthen food security, and ensure that growth in the sector is supported by responsible and sustainable resource management,” he said.

The project also aims to reduce bycatch, improve fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions, while strengthening cooperation between the two countries as they mark 80 years of diplomatic relations.
