Norway shares bottle recycling success with Vietnam

Norway is offering to share its experience in plastic recycling with Vietnam, as part of broader cooperation on sustainability and climate goals.

In a recent interview with VTV1’s Net Zero program, Chargé d’affaires a.i. at the Norwegian Embassy in Hanoi, Mette Møglestue, highlighted how Norway’s Deposit Return System (DRS) has helped the country achieve a return rate of over 92% for PET bottles and cans.

“A key to our success with the DRS is that a strong partnership between the government, the private sector including producers and retailers, and the consumers, is crucial,” said Møglestue. She emphasized that Norway was among the first countries globally to implement such a system.

She added that Norway is ready to support Vietnam in developing its own version of the DRS, tailored to local conditions such as existing waste collection infrastructure and the role of informal waste collectors.

The interview aired as part of Vietnam’s efforts to promote circular economy models and enhance plastic recycling.

The full segment is available via the embassy’s social media channels.
