Novo Nordisk and Nanyang raise haemophilia awareness in Thailand

In a unique collaboration to raise awareness of haemophilia in Thailand, Danish healthcare company Novo Nordisk and Thai footwear brand Nanyang have partnered to deliver specially designed shoes to members of the Thai Haemophilia Patient Club.

The initiative, part of the “EquiStep” project, symbolises a joint commitment to promoting equitable access to healthcare. The new Cocoon shoes, created by artist Kru Parn – Somnuek Klangnok – were presented at a ceremony in Bangkok on Monday 6 May 2025, marking the delivery of 1,500 pairs to the patient association.

“Today’s launch may be a small first step in our project, but it represents a giant leap for haemophilia patients in Thailand,” said Enrico Cañal Bruland, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Pharma (Thailand) Ltd.

While the Cocoon shoes are not medical devices, they are intended to represent equality and inclusion, drawing attention to the often-overlooked daily challenges faced by people with haemophilia—such as the risk of internal bleeding from seemingly minor injuries or physical activity.

Nanyang Managing Director Dr Chakrapol Chandavimol described the initiative as an extension of the company’s social mission. “The shoes blend artistry with functionality and carry a powerful message—equitable access to quality products with a contribution to society,” he said.

Haemophilia affects an estimated 2,000 people in Thailand, according to the World Federation of Haemophilia’s 2023 global survey. Many patients go undiagnosed or lack access to appropriate treatment and support.

“The Cocoon shoes symbolise the public and private commitment to creating greater equitable access to haemophilia treatment,” said Dr Monthon Suwannuraks, President of the Thai Haemophilia Patient Club.

The EquiStep project reflects an ongoing alliance between Novo Nordisk, Nanyang, and the patient community, united by a vision of raising awareness and fostering a more inclusive society for those living with chronic conditions.
