Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard will visit China on 16–17 October to meet representatives of the Chinese Government, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs said. The agenda includes Sweden’s priorities in finance, trade and security policy, with dialogue pursued “where this is possible and in line with our interests and values.”

The trip takes place as Sweden and China mark 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2025. Sweden became the first Western country to formally recognize China in May 1950.

This trip is part of a longer list of diplomatic visits to China. China’s Foreign Ministry said Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand will also visit on Thursday–Friday, while French President Emmanuel Macron’s diplomatic adviser Emmanuel Bonne will be in Beijing Wednesday–Thursday for a new round of the China–France strategic dialogue.

Bilateral trade between Sweden and China has grown to over 17$ billion, according to Chinese statements. The visits come amid continuing tariff tensions between China and the US affecting multiple economies.
