
China has launched its 16th Arctic scientific expedition, marking the first time the country has sent four research vessels to the Arctic.
According to the Polar Research Institute of China, the expedition will run until October and focus on climate change, sea ice, marine ecosystems and deep-sea research.
The fleet includes three icebreakers, Xuelong, Xuelong 2 and Jidi, as well as the research vessel Tansuo-3, which is equipped to deploy a crewed deep-sea submersible beneath Arctic sea ice.
