Sweden raises espionage case and Gui Minhai with China’s foreign minister

Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard confirmed that she raised the recent espionage case involving two detained men during talks with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, according to Swedish public broadcaster SVT.

The meeting took place on July 4 as Wang continued his Nordic tour, which includes Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway.

Two men remanded in custody

A 35-year-old Chinese citizen and a 22-year-old Malaysian citizen were arrested in the Stockholm area on July 1.

Both have since been remanded in custody on suspicion of aggravated unlawful intelligence activities against Sweden. Both deny the allegations, according to Swedish public broadcaster SVT.

Speaking after the meeting, Malmer Stenergard declined to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings but confirmed that the case had been discussed with Wang Yi.

Gui Minhai also raised

She also said she had again called for the release of Gui Minhai, the Swedish publisher who has been imprisoned in China since 2015.

Swedish authorities have not disclosed whether the suspected intelligence activities were carried out on behalf of any foreign state.
